Dreams

Why do people dream?
Do dreams mean something?
Why do we forget dreams?

Why do people dream?

There are many theories as to why we dream. The most common theory is that we dream to practice responses to threatening situations.  In REM sleep, the brain fires in similar ways as it does when it's specifically threatened for survival. In addition to that, the part of the brain that practices motor activity (running, punching) fires increasingly during REM sleep, even though the limbs are still. This explains why in some dreams we are running away from something or fighting someone.  (Why Do We Dream)

Do dreams mean something?

Recent studies of the biology of dreaming does not suggest that dreams have no meaning. Dreams are meaningful mental products, just as thoughts and daydreams are. They express important wishes, fears, concerns, and worries of the dreamer; so undoubtedly the study and analysis of dreams can sometimes be a useful procedure, revealing different aspects of a person's mental functioning.(Dreaming)

Why do we forget dreams?

We forget 95-99% of our dreams mostly because of the reason that we sleep right through them and our mind isn't focused on remembering our dreams, it is focused on repairing and getting ready for the next day (Dreams: FAQ)
