What is gold used for?

What is gold?

It is a metallic element, symbol Au, one of the transition elements in group 11 of the periodic table. Gold melts at about 1064° C and boils at about 2856° C. Pure gold is the most malleable and ductile of all the metals. It is bright yellow and has a high luster.

How much is it worth?

In the 1980s gold was a massive $850 a troy ounce ((1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams). They then dropped considerably and settled at about $350 a troy ounce in the mid-1990s. Gold prices rose again in the mid-2000s, reaching over $1000 a troy ounce in March 2008.

What is gold used for?

Because of it's beauty and resistance to corrosion gold is mostly used for coins, jewelry, and metalwork.  Gold is also used in components such as connectors, switches, and relay contacts in electrical and electronic devices. It is also used as a coating on some space satellites.
